State-of-the-Art Flagpole Helps with Wind Speed Tests

The Vita Student, Portland Crescent building in Leeds has erected a new state-of-the-art flagpole with the help of expert designers and flagpole engineers from Flagmakers. The custom-made 13-metre flagpole sits atop of their building in Leeds City Centre and features an anemometer at the top, collecting data for important meteorological research.

An anemometer is an instrument that collects data about wind speed and direction. The tool gathers essential information that can help predict the weather, analyse the atmosphere, and provide accurate readings for airports and aircraft. The anemometer has been fitted right at the very top of the flagpole and takes readings from 66 meters above ground level. The information gathered will be used to guide research for several projects and give up to date statistics and details used by a variety of teams.

Readings will be collected by the anemometer and sent electronically through a data cable routed down inside the flagpole. This will allow for quicker use of the data collected whilst still presenting a sleek and professional look to the exterior of the flagpole. The flagpole was constructed using a two-piece tapered aluminium pole which was powder coated in white to give an incredibly durable and virtually maintenance-free finish. The mounting brackets were all hot dip galvanised finish to prevent corrosion.
