The Design of the LGBT Flag
The Pride flag features 6 horizontal stripes in 6 different colours. From top to bottom, these colours feature: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. For this reason, it has been labelled the Rainbow Flag and is a world-recognised symbol of hope and pride for the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBT Flag History
The pride flag was first created by Gilbert Baker in 1977, who was commissioned to create a flag that represented the gay, lesbian and bisexual community in America. This was first displayed at the Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco. One year later, in 1978, an openly gay politician, Harvey Milk was assassinated in San Francisco. This resulted in a high-demand for the new rainbow LGBT+ flag in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
The flag has been subjected to amendments since its creation over 30 years ago. For example, in 2017, Baker added a new lavender stripe to the top of the flag to represent diversity. In 2017, the state of Philadelphia in the USA, added the colours black and brown to represent people of colour within the community. In 2018, the Progress Pride Flag was created using the original rainbow flag to draw attention to the issues faced by transgender people within the community.

Our digitally printed Rainbow LGBT flags are made to a high quality using a durable woven polyester. Each of the printed flags is hand finished including a double sewn hem for durability. Flags are usually finished with a headband, rope and toggle for flying with other finishing styles available if you have a chat with the team.
If you are looking for a more premium finish we would recommend a sewn flag, where each colour is hand sewn to create a stunning rainbow flag. The material we use for these flags is 155gsm woven fabric, giving excellent durability and a look of quality – ideal for flying at this year’s Pride marches.
Both styles of flag are available to buy online simply click the icon and choose your size and type from the drop down menu. All of our flags now come with Free Delivery for even better value!
