Hand sewn Equatorial Guinea national flags are made to MoD & Flag Institute standard patterns by cutting panels of the required colours from a roll of fabric, before being sewn together by our skilled flagmakers to create the official Equatorial Guinea pattern. National flag designs with complex details will have a printed panel or badge added to the main field of the flag.

Dye-sublimated Equatorial Guinea national flags are created using our state-of-the-art textile print systems and woven polyester flag fabric in our UK manufacturing facility. Chosen for strength and durability, knitted polyester is an ideal choice for anybody looking for a good value national flag finished ready to fly from your flagpole.

The Equatorial Guinea national flag is finished by hand with a headband rope and toggle as standard, ready to attach directly to a flagpole. The three exposed sides of the flag are finished with a strong double hem and a triple sewn hem on the fly edge for extra durability.

All of our printed Equatorial Guinea flags are produced by a process called Dye Sublimation. The system drenches each fibre of the fabric, resulting in a flag with wonderful precise colour, and vitally the design appears perfectly on each side. This is known as ‘printed through to reverse’ and is an important consideration when choosing your flag as both sides will be seen when flying.

Brief History

There was no official colonial flag when Equatorial Guinea was a Spanish colony between 1778 and 1968. Allegedly the Spanish flag was flown during this time. The British had a base in Spanish Guinea between 1827 and 1843 but it is not known if any flag was used.

In 1968 Equatorial Guinea became a republic and independent of Spanish Control. To celebrate this the first official flag of Equatorial Guinea was flown. They chose a green-white-red tricolour with a blue triangle at the left hand side.

The green symbolises the natural resources, white symbolises peace and red symbolises blood shed, the blue triangle symbolises the sea.

The First Flag of Equatorial Guinea (1968 – 1973)

When the dictator Francisco Nguema took power in 1973 a second flag was designed. It featured the same basic layout as the first flag but an emblem in the centre of the white band. The emblem featured a cockerel and several tools including pick axe, knife, axe and hoe. Featuring a banner “work” above and “Unity, Peace, Justice” below.

When he was overthrown in 1979 a new coat of arms was adopted. The coat of arms featured a white shield with a silk cotton trees at the centre. Above are six six-sided stars and blow is “Unity, Peace, Justice”. The six stars represent the county and the five surrounding islands. The flag without the coat of arms is an unofficial variant flag.

The Coat of Arms of Equatorial Guinea

The Coat of Arms of Equatorial Guinea was adopted at the same time as the modern flag on the 21st August 1979. It is the same as the Coat of Arms from 1968. It features a shield with a silk cotton tree at the centre with six, six-sided, stars above and the motto “UNIDAD, PAZ, JUSTICIA” underneath.
