Brief History of the Ukrainian National Flag
The earliest known flag of the area of the Ukraine was the swallow-tailed flag of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that was created in 1587 after the union of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania joined. From 1772 the Flag of the Habsburg monarchy was flown in the Ukraine under the control of the Austrian Empire.
Short-Lived Revolution
A Revolution saw the modern yellow and blue bicolour created for the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1917. This freedom was short-lived when in 1919 the soviets invaded and Ukraine became the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The flag was changed to a simple red flag with gold sans serif ‘Y.C.C.P’ letters in the top left hand corner.
During Soviet Control
During Soviet control the flag was changed three more times. Finally settling on a red field with an off centre gold hammer and sickle with five pointed star and thick horizontal blue stripe in the lower half of the flag in 1949 after the Ukrainian SSR joined the United Nations.
The Modern State Flag of Ukraine
The modern State flag of Ukraine was officially adopted in 1992 when the Soviet Empire disbanded. The yellow and blue bicolour from the Ukrainian People’s Republic was chosen. It is also hung vertically on many public buildings.
The Ukrainian Coat of Arms
The Ukrainian Coat of Arms takes its colours from the Ukraine National flag and is said to represent the trident of God on earth and in heaven. It is officially called the lesser coat of arms, however a full coat of arms is yet to be adopted.
The look is taken from the Emblem of the Ukrainian People’s Republic that was used from 1918 to 1920. The actual Trident has been used in the seals of Rurik Dynasty from 945 to 1045.
During Soviet rule they Coat of Arms of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was used. This featured a hammer and sickle with red star and sunrise surrounded by wheat. The emblem changed only slightly four times during the occupation.
The Presidential Standard of Ukraine
In 1999 the Presidential Standard of Ukraine was adopted. It features the trident from the Ukrainian Lesser Coat of Arms on a blue square flag with a golden threaded border
The Regional Flags of Ukraine
Each region or Oblast, meaning district, of the Ukraine has it’s own flag. They are wildly different to the flag of Ukraine and were designed and adopted after 1991. Here are examples of the Ukrainian oblasts.
